Surgery preparation is very important. Follow these helpful tips.

Is your pet booked in for a surgery? Here is what you should know prior to bringing your pet in.

  1. There will be specific fasting instructions required for your pet.
    • Under direction of your veterinarian, ensuring your pet is properly fasted will help prevent any complications from normal drug related vomiting. If your pet has eaten and then vomits, there is a risk of aspirating that into the lungs, which can be fatal.
      • SOME pets may require different fasting instructions. Animals with certain medical conditions or requirements will vary on a case by case basis. Please call us at 780-417-4770 to confirm the fasting instructions specific to your pet.

  2. There are precautions we can take to help ensure your pet has a safe induction and recovery from the surgery.
    • There are many benefits of screening your pet prior to surgery.
      • Detecting hidden illness:Even if your pet may look happy and healthy on the outside, you may not be aware of internal illnesses that could impede the safety of your pet’s surgery.
      • Reducing the risk for your pet:
If results are normal, we can proceed confidently. If results are abnormal, the anesthesia protocol can be altered and optimized for your pet to ensure safety and reduced risk of anesthesia.
      • This will be part of your pet’s medical history.Trends, changes and improvements can be closely monitored throughout your pet’s life.
      • If there are other specific precautions to take for your pet, we will inform you as soon as we know.

  3. When you arrive at the clinic…..

    • We will spend a few moments going over the estimate and consent form for you pet’s procedure to make sure we are all on the same page, so to speak.
    • Please ask any questions you may have about anything that may be unclear.
    • It is also extremely important for you to provide a phone number that you can be easily reached at, in case of any unforeseen circumstances.
    • Once your pet is in our care, be rest assured they are receiving the best care possible, and feel free to call us at 780-417-4770 to check on your special furry friend at any time.
